Have you ever wondered how people survive in school when they have anxiety? Well, in the book, Better with Butter by Victoria Pointek, the story follows the main character named Marvel, and she is scared of everything like rollercoasters, bugs, stage fright, and more! Her dad works for the navy and is usually at sea saving the world. She has an anxiety disorder that is affecting her ability to complete 6th grade. Marvel has a skit to participate in and she is terrified to perform! She practices every single day, but on the day of her skit, she freezed up in front of everyone and embarrassed herself. From that day onwards, people started making fun of her a lot. One day, she saw a group of boys scaring a goat. Not just any goat but a fainting goat! When she met Butter, the goat, she fell in love with her and for the first time in her life she stood up for an animal. She never even stood up for herself or anyone else when they got bullied! Marvel decided to keep the goat, but there are a few problems with keeping Butter. The first problem is that Marvel’s mom doesn’t really want her to keep Butter, so she only lets her until they find the owner. The second problem is that after she made Butter her emotional support animal and can bring it to school, people want her to make Butter a part of the school play and Marvel doesn’t accept that. Eventually, Marvel accepts Butter being in the school play, but is not looking forward to it. When Butter’s owner comes, sadness rises up in her because the owner found Marvel’s poster about Butter and wants her back. Autumn doesn’t talk a lot, but she did make a friend in school, Logan, who loves to participate in everything unlike her. She also made another friend, Cooper, and thought he was a tourist exploring her hometown even though he actually lives there. Autumn loves to write stories, so when she heard about Dear Student, she wanted to participate in it. There is a problem though, her friend, Logan, really wants to do DearStudent too, so if Autumn gets DearStudent, then she can’t tell her best friends, Cooper, and Logan, because she is not allowed to. DearStudent is basically giving advice to people who ask for it in secret but it’s just online. If a student wants to get DearStudent’s opinion, then they email Mr. Baker their question and Mr.Baker will email the secret person, or as also known as Dear Student. Surprisingly, Autumn got Dear Student, but Autumn is deciding if she should tell her friends, Cooper and Logan, that she got Dear Student. Will she tell her friends that she got Dear Student or will she keep it a secret from everyone?
